Healy Helps to Lead Bears Past Bryant, 12-9

PROVIDENCE, RI – Junior Grace Healy (Bellport, NY) scored three goals and assisted a fourth and also won a game-high eight draw controls to help lead the Brown women's lacrosse team (9-2) to a 12-9 win over in-state rival Bryant (6-6) on Sunday afternoon at Stevenson Field.

Healy's play was instrumental in the second half, which saw the Bulldogs twice close their deficit to a single goal. However, Healy answered each of those Bryant goals with one of her own to help the Bears hold a two-goal advantage until scoring twice in a span of 26 seconds late in the game to open up a four-goal lead. Healy also won five of her eight draw controls during the final 30 minutes, as Brown earned eight draws to Bryant's one in the second half.

In addition to Healy's four points, senior Tara Rooke (Wilbraham, MA) also tallied four points with four assists, while sophomore Abby Bunting (Wellesley, MA) scored three goals, and junior Bre Hudgins (Syracuse, NY) and sophomore Janie Gion (Northfield, IL) both had three points with two goals and an assist each.

After Bryant opened the scoring with a Lisa Vendel goal just 2:09 into the game, Hudgins answered for the Bears 18 seconds later when she finished a feed from Rooke to tie the game at 1-1 and spark a 4-0 Bears' run in which Hudgins and Gion alternated goals during a span of just under four minutes.

Vendel halted Brown's momentum with her second of the afternoon on a free position shot 11:05 into the game and then a goal by Kimberley Sniffen 53 seconds later brought the Bulldogs to within 4-3.

Brown regained the two-goal lead on Bunting's first of the day with 16:23 left in the half and then junior Danielle Mastro (Endicott, NY) stretched the lead to 6-3 just 24 seconds later.

Bryant's Lauren Descalzo, who led all goal scorers with four goals, answered Mastro's goal, but back-to-back goals by Healy and Bunting increased Brown's lead to 8-4 with less than five minutes left before the break.

Sniffen closed the first-half scoring with her second of the afternoon, as Bryant cut its deficit to three goals, 8-5, after the first 30 minutes of play.

The Bulldogs opened the second half with two goals in the first 10 minutes to come to within 8-7, but Healy's second of the day, assisted by senior Kasey Wagner (Southborough, MA) pulled Brown back ahead by two, 9-7.

Descalzo made it a one-goal game with her third of the day at 12:44, but Healy again answered for Brown two minutes later, as the Bears held a 10-8 lead with 10:40 left in the game.

Mastro and Bunting both found the back of the net in a span of 26 seconds with less than four minutes remaining to put the game out of reach. Descalzo added her fourth of the afternoon with 1:47 left, but Hudgins won the ensuing draw control and Brown maintained possession until the final whistle, holding on for the 12-9 victory.

Defensively, four different players each had one caused turnover for Brown, while Bunting and junior Erin Roos (Wilmette, IL) each had a pair of ground balls. In addition to Healy's eight draw controls, Hudgins earned four to help lead the Bears.

Overall, Brown outshot Bryant, 25-19, and held a 16-7 advantage in draw controls. Bryant won the ground ball battle, 10-7.

Sophomore Kellie Roddy (Poway, CA) earned her ninth win of the season with five saves in goal. Brown continues action on Friday, April 12, when it travels to Ithaca, NY to face Cornell in a 4:00 p.m. Ivy contest. The Bears are home again next Sunday, April 14th, when they host Boston College in a 2:00 p.m. game.
