Providence, R.I. - The Brown women's lacrosse team earned its fourth straight win and extended its record to 7-1 overall, with a 14-3 victory over St. Mary's College (CA) Tuesday afternoon at Stevenson Field. Junior Bre Hudgins (Syracuse, NY) led the Bears' attack with three goals and an assist. The loss drops St. Mary's to 2-6 on the season.
Brown scored the game's first nine goals, opening up a 9-0 lead on a Hudgins free position goal with 4:31 left in the opening half. Hudgins, who now has 23 goals on the season, scored three goals in the spurt, while sophomore Janie Gion (Northfield, IL) and junior Danielle Mastro (Endicott, NY) netted two goals each.
The Gaels finally got on the scoreboard with 14 seconds left in the half when senior Jillian Chong scored on a free position.
Senior Lindsay Minges (Rochester, NY) scored two quick goals for the Bears to open the second half, the second on a free position, to open up an 11-1 Brown lead with 21:42 remaining.
The two teams exchanged goals with Chong scoring twice for the Gaels and freshmen Sarah Nesi (Westport, CT) and Carolyn Westphal (Lancaster, PA) scoring for the Bears. Sophomore Julia Carrellas (Middletown, RI) scored her second goal of the game for Brown with 1:30 remaining for the final margin of victory, 14-3.
Sophomore Kellie Roddy (Poway, CA) was solid in the Brown goal in earning her seventh win of the season, making eight saves, while allowing one goal in 38:18. Freshman Victoria Holland (Huntington, NY) came in for the final 21:42 and registered four saves.
Chong scored all three of the St. Mary's goals. Katherine Herzog made eight saves for the Gaels, playing a complete game.
Brown returns to action again on Saturday, March 30, traveling to Hanover, NH to face #12 Dartmouth in a key Ivy League match-up. Face-off is 12 noon.
