PROVIDENCE, RI – The Brown women's lacrosse team (6-8, 1-6) closed out its 2012 season with a 16-8 loss to #12 Cornell (11-4, 5-2) on Saturday afternoon at Stevenson Field. The Bears went ahead, 1-0, in the opening 29 seconds, but Cornell scored nine of the next 10 goals to take a 9-2 lead, and never looked back en route to the victory. Brown was led by freshman Alexandra Crerend (New Canaan, CT), who had three goals and a game-high seven draw controls, while senior Kaela McGilloway (Sea Cliff, NY) had two goals and an assist.
After Crerend won the opening draw control, the Bears wasted little time in taking the early lead, as junior Tara Rooke (Wilbraham, MA) connected for her sixth goal of the season just 29 seconds into the game. However, the Big Red would answer just 40 seconds later to knot the game at 1-1.

Crerend scored back-to-back goals in a span of 38 seconds to bring Brown to within 9-4, but the Big Red would outscore the Bears, 2-1, the rest of the half, including one with just two seconds remaining, to take a 10-5 lead at the break.
Cornell extended its lead to 11-5 just 3:36 after halftime, but McGilloway answered for the Bears less than four minutes later to keep the deficit at six goals. Another Cornell score with 17:26 left to play was answered by McGilloway 11 seconds later, to make it 13-7. The Big Red would answer again to go ahead, 14-7, with 13:43 remaining. Sophomore Danielle Mastro (Endicott, NY) connected on a feed from McGilloway with 10:35 left to bring Brown to with 14-8, but that was as close as the Bears would get, as Cornell tallied the final two goals of the contest to account for the 16-8 final.
The Bears had many chances throughout the second half to get even closer, but Cornell's Carly Gniewek recorded eight saves in the second half as Brown held a 16-12 advantage in shots and won seven of nine draw controls during the final 30 minutes.
For the game, Cornell edged Brown in shots, 28-24 and won the ground ball battle, 17-13. The Bears finished with 16 draw controls to Cornell's 10, while each team caused 11 turnovers.
