RIVERDALE, NY – Senior Kaela McGilloway (Sea Cliff, NY) and sophomore Bre Hudgsins (Syracuse, NY) led five different goal scorers, as the Brown women's lacrosse team (2-1) won its second game in a row, a 9-2 decision over Manhattan (2-3). McGilloway scored three goals and added an assist, while Hudgins tallied two goals and assisted a third. Sophomore Grace Healy (Bellport, NY) also scored twice in the win.
Playing their second game in as many days, the Bears went up, 2-0, during the opening 10 minutes on goals by Healy at 2:34 and McGilloway at 8:05. McGilloway assisted Healy's goal, while Hudgins earned an assist on McGilloway's goal.
At the other end of the field, senior Isabel Harvey (Baltimore, MD) was instrumental in helping Brown start off with the two-goal advantage, stopping three shots by Manhattan between the two Brown goals.
The Jaspers got on the board at 10:18 to make it a 2-1 game and then both teams were held off the scoreboard for the next nine minutes, as Hudgins' free position goal with 10:24 left sparked a three-goal Brown run during a stretch of eight minutes. Following Hudgins' goal, Healy put Brown up, 4-1, when she finished a feed from freshman Janie Gion (Northfield, IL) at 12:34, and then Hudgins scored a man-up goal at 27:09 to give Brown a 5-1 lead.
Manhattan closed the half with a goal at 19:27, as Brown held a 5-2 advantage at the break.
Brown extended its lead to 6-2 on a goal by junior Lindsay Minges (Rochester, NY) 6:37 after halftime and then increased it to 7-2 when sophomore Danielle Mastro (Endicott, NY) fed McGilloway for her second of the afternoon less than two minutes later.
However, just as they did in the first half, the two teams went through a long scoreless stretch, snapped by McGilloway's third goal of the day, giving Brown an 8-2 lead with 8:01 left to play. Freshman Alexandra Crerend (New Canaan, CT) added the final score of the game with 2:45 remaining.
Led by Healy, Mastro, and freshman Alyssa DiBona (Media, PA), who each won two draw controls, Brown dominated the draw, winning 12 of the 13 taken. Healy, McGilloway, DiBona, and junior Tara Rooke (Wilbraham, MA) all had two ground balls to lead the Bears in that category, while DiBona led Brown with two caused turnovers.
Harvey played the first half in goal, stopping five shots, while allowing both goals. Freshman Kellie Roddy (Poway, CA) played the second half and stopped all three shots she faced.
After three straight road games to open the 2012 season, Brown returns home this weekend when it hosts Princeton on Saturday, March 10th, in a 1:00 contest.
