COLUMBUS, OH - 14th-ranked Ohio State (5-0) earned a 16-3 win over the Brown women's lacrosse team (0-1) on Saturday afternoon in the season opener for the Bears. Brown held an early lead, but the Buckeyes went on to score 12 straight goals to take control of the game.
Ohio State was led by Gabby Capuzzi and Jackie Cifarelli, who each had three goals, while Capuzzi chipped in two assists to lead the team with five points along with Alayna Markwordt, who had two goals and three assists.
The Bears had control of the game early on, winning the opening draw control and working the ball around on attack. Seniors Kaela McGilloway (Sea Cliff, NY) and Julia Keller (Concord, MA) connected for the first score of the game at 28:12. However, Capuzzi would score her first of two straight at 22:57 and 21:00 to tie the game and then give the hosts a 2-1 lead. The teams traded opportunities over the next six minutes, but Ohio State went on a 5-0 run to close out the first half and take a 7-1 lead into the break.
The Buckeyes extended the lead to 12-1 with five goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half, before sophomore Danielle Mastro (Endicott, NY) scored on a free position attempt with 17:54 remaining. Ohio State built a 16-2 lead with four goals over a span of 12 minutes, while junior Tara Rooke (Wilbraham, MA) scored an unassisted goal at 1:46 to account for the 16-3 final.
In addition to the four players who registered a point in the contest, sophomore Bre Hudgins (Syracuse, NY) led Brown with three draw controls, while freshman Abby Bunting (Wellesley, MA) added two. Sophomore Abbey Van Horne (Ridgewood, NJ) and McGilloway each had two ground balls to lead Brown, while three different players each registered one caused turnover.
Brown continues action next weekend when it travels to New York to face Columbia in its 2012 Ivy opener Saturday at 1:00. The Bears will remain in New York and play at Manhattan on Sunday, March 4th, also at 1:00.
