Bears Host Yale in Season Finale Wednesday
THE GAME: The Bears enter Wednesday's season finale following a 12-5 loss to Penn on Saturday. The game also closes out a three-game homestand, with the Bears splitting the first two games of the stand.
LAST TIME OUT: In Saturday's loss to #8 Penn, Brown held a 3-1 lead with 12 minutes left in the first half after goals by freshman Danielle Mastro and seniors Paris Waterman and Alexa Caldwell. However, the Quakers called a timeout and closed the half with a five-goal run, extending it to six goals early in the second half, to take a 7-3 lead with 24 minutes left in the game. Freshman Bre Hudgins' team-leading 35th goal of the year brought Brown to within 7-4, but another Penn run gave the Quakers a 10-4 lead with 15 minutes left and the Bears were unable to get any closer than 10-5 on Waterman's second goal of the day. In addition to Waterman's pair, junior Kaela McGilloway tallied a pair of assists. Hudgins and Caldwell led Brown with five ground balls each, while Waterman and Caldwell each had a team-high two draw controls. Caldwell also led Brown with two caused turnovers. Junior Isabel Harvey earned the start in net and recorded seven saves (10 GA) in 52:26, before giving way to senior Maggie Suprey, who made one save (two GA) in the final 7:34. After breaking the school record for goals in a game (26) against St. Mary's earlier in the week, the team broke two more school records against the Quakers. Waterman's second goal of the game was the 163rd scored by Brown this season, breaking the old record of 162, set last year. In addition, with Hudgins' free position shot and goal 9:36 into the second half, the team broke the school record for shots in a season, previously 375 last year, and enter the final game with 383 shots.
ALL-TIME VS. YALE: All-time, Brown is 6-30-1 against Yale, which claimed an 8-7 win in New Haven last year. The Bears' last win over the Bulldogs came in 2009 when Brown won, 7-5, in the 2009 season finale.
LAST MEETING VS. YALE: In the 2010 meeting against the Bulldogs, Brown got off to a 3-0 lead on goals by Paris Waterman '11 (2) and Bethany Buzzell '10 in the opening 6:34. Yale would score three goals of its own over an 11 minute stretch to tie the game at 3-3, before a goal by Alexa Caldwell with one second remaining in the first half made it 4-3 Brown at the break. The two teams traded goals to start the second, before back-to-back Yale goals 15 seconds apart gave the Bulldogs a 6-5 lead with 17:48 to play. Brown tied the score at 6-6 and again at 7-7, never allowing Yale to lead by more than a goal, but the Bulldogs scored the game-winner with nine seconds left to account for the 8-7 final. Waterman led Brown with five goals, while Caldwell led the Bears with three draw controls. Molly McCarthy '10 and Lindsay Minges '13 both had two caused turnovers to lead Brown, while Isabel Harvey '12 made four saves.
