ITHACA, NY – The Brown women's lacrosse team (5-7, 1-4) dropped a 14-7 decision to Cornell on Saturday afternoon. The Big Red utilized a six-goal run spanning 12 minutes during the final 6:51 of the first half and the first 5:16 of the second to break open a 4-3 game en route to the win.
After a pair of Cornell goals in the first 4:27 gave the home team a 2-0 lead, sophomore Tara Rooke (Wilbraham, MA) scored her first of the season to cut the lead in half at the 6:08 mark. The two teams traded goals over the next 15 minutes with Rooke and senior Paris Waterman (Newark, DE) scoring for the Bears, as Cornell held a 4-3 lead with 8:02 left before the break.
However, the Big Red closed the half with three straight goals, including one on a free position attempt with five second left and then scored three more goals in the first 5:16 of the second half to take a 10-3 lead.
Junior Julia Keller (Concord, MA) finished a feed by freshman Danielle Mastro (Endicott, NY) 6:56 into the second half to spark a 3-0 Bears' run, as back-to-back free position goals by Waterman brought Brown to within 10-6 with 15:25 left in the game.
Cornell prevented any chance of a Brown comeback attempt, reeling off three straight goals in just over five minutes to stretch its lead to 13-6 with 5:37 remaining. Junior Kaela McGilloway (Sea Cliff, NY) scored Brown's seventh goal, assisted by Keller, while Cornell added one more with 2:06 left to account for the 14-7 final.
Senior Alexa Caldwell (Middletown, DE) led Brown with two ground balls, while freshman Bre Hudgins (Syracuse, NY) and Caldwell both had a team-high three draw controls. Junior Isabel Harvey (Baltimore, MD) made seven saves in 51:45, before giving way to senior Maggie Suprey (South Boston, MA), who allowed two goals in the final 8:15.
Brown continues action on Tuesday, April 19th, when it hosts St. Mary's in a 4:00 p.m. contest.
