PROVIDENCE, RI - The Brown women's lacrosse team (5-4, 1-3) will
close out a stretch of three straight road games this weekend when
it faces Columbia (4-5, 0-4) and Manhattan (1-9) on Saturday and
Sunday, respectively. The Bears, who are coming off Tuesday night's
19-4 victory over Bryant for the inaugural Ocean State Cup, will
look to win consecutive games for the second time this season.
Brown enters the game with sophomore Kaela McGilloway (Sea Cliff, NY) and junior Paris Waterman (Newark, DE) leading the offense with 49 combined points. McGilloway has 27 points (20g, 7a), while Waterman adds 22 (19g, 3a).
On Tuesday against the Bulldogs, McGilloway led the scoring with a career-high 7 points (3g, 4a). 10 other players found the back of the net in the game, including multiple-goal scorers Alexa Caldwell (Middletown, DE) and Nancy Baker (Upper Arlington, OH) each with three, and Kara Kelly (Garden City, NY) and Katelyn Caro (Andover, MA) each with two. The Bears built a 9-0 lead in the game and never looked back, eventually leading by as many as 16 goals (19-3). Six different players had a team-high three ground balls, while Waterman led the way with three draw controls and Caldwell led the team with three caused turnovers. Sophomore Isabel Harvey (Baltimore, MD) made five saves (two goals) in 36 minutes to earn the win, while freshman Brienne Donovan (Pine Township, PA) had three saves (two goals) in 24 minutes.
The Lions will look to post their first Ivy win of the season and snap a two-game skid on Saturday against the Bears. Through nine games this season, Brittany Shannon leads the offensive charge with a team-high 30 goals and 36 points. Kacie Johnson is right behind Shannon with 27 points and leads the team with 11 assists. Amanda Goodhart leads Columbia with 14 caused turnovers and 17 ground balls, while Sarah Avalloe leads the team with 27 draw controls. Karlee Blank has played every minute in net this season and has a 12.59 GAA with a .429 save percentage.
Saturday marks the 13th meeting between Brown and Columbia with the Bears leading the all-time series with a 12-0 record. Last season, the Bears trailed, 8-4, at the half, but utilized a nine-goal spree in the second half to come back and earn a 15-10 win. In last year's win, Katelyn Caro ’12 (Andover, MA) led Brown with four goals, while Alexa Caldwell ’11 (Middletown, DE) added three goals and one assist and Kaela McGilloway ’12 (Sea Cliff, NY) had two goals and two assists. Caldwell was huge in the midfield with four ground balls, three draw controls, and three caused turnovers. Isabel Harvey ’12 (Baltimore, MD) recorded one save.
Manhattan will look to snap a seven game skid on Sunday morning
against Brown. The Jaspers enter Sunday's game following a 13-10
loss to Siena on Thursday. Manhattan is led by Chrissy Gutenberger,
who has 28 points (24g, 4a), while Phelicia VanOverbeke adds 22
(19g, 3a) and Caralyn Hickey has 20 (15g, 5a). Breana Leonard has
29 ground balls to lead Manhattan, while Keri Morrison has a
team-high 20 caused turnovers. Julia DiBernardo has played every
minute in net this season and has a 17.22 GAA with a .338 save
The Bears' only meeting against Manhattan was during the 2008 season when Brown posted an 18-8 victory at home. Lauren Vitkus ’09 and Jesse Nunn ’09 led Brown with four goals each. Ali Holland ’08 and Krystina DeLuca ’09 each added two goals, while Jadie DeTolla ’08, Justine Lupo ’08, Kelly Robinson ’09, Kara Kelly ’10 (Garden City, NY), Kiki Manners ’10 (North Potomac, MD), and Macie Winship (Shrewsbury, MA) each had one goal. Melissa King ’08 earned the win in net with three saves in just under 41 minutes, before giving way to Maggie Suprey ’10, who made three saves in just over 19 minutes. Both allowed four goals.
