Providence Journal Highlights Meehan Auditorium's New Look

Oct. 30, 2002

Brown hockey fans can get their first official look at renovated Meehan Auditorium this weekend when the Bears women and men open their seasons.

Meehan has received a $4.3-million face-lift, its first since the building opened 40 years ago. The lobby has been redesigned and enlarged with new ticket booths and concession areas. Portraits of prominent figures in Brown hockey history hang on the walls leading to the south grandstand. Four new locker rooms for visiting teams have been built beneath that grandstand, enabling Brown to host multi-team tournaments such as the Women's ECAC Championships that will be played there in March.

Also, the men's and women's varsity locker rooms have been renovated, a new training room has been installed that is four times the size of the old one with whirlpool and ice machine, men's and women's coaches' locker rooms enhanced and women's coaches' offices consolidated.

A dramatic addition to the arena is the Davis Lounge, a glass-walled hospitality room above the concourse behind the west goal. It is named for Foster B. "Pete" Davis, a 1939 alumnus and longtime supporter of Brown hockey. He contributed to the Meehan building fund four decades ago and to the renovation effort this year.

The major interior work is finished. Brown is awaiting delivery of exterior panels for the facade over the new entrance. The parking lot in front of the rink has been repaved and new curbing installed.

The hockey facility has been renamed the Pollard Family Rink at Meehan Auditorium to recognize a $1-million donation from Bill and Jeannette Pollard of Essex, Conn., and the three generations of their family who have attended Brown. He graduated in 1950, she from Pembroke in 1948. Both have been longtime supporters of the Brown Sports Foundation and the Brown Football Association. They sent three daughters, Judith '77, Wendy '81 and Edith '85, to Brown. Judith and her husband, Murray Danforth, also Class of '77, have a daughter, Merebea, at Brown now.

An official rededication ceremony is planned for late in the season.

The Brown women, 25-8-2 and NCAA runners-up last season, will skate against Niagara Friday night at 7 and Saturday afternoon at 3. The Brown men, 14-15-2 last season, will play Harvard Saturday night at 7.
