BEARS GEAR UP FOR FIRST EVER NCAA FROZEN FOUR
March 21, 2002
The matchup between Brown and Minnesota promises to be an exciting one, as the two teams have met nine times overall, maintaining a series record of 4-4-1. Brown's last win against the Gophers came during the 2000-2001 season, when Brown defeated Minnesota 3-2 at Meehan Auditorium. This season the Bears dropped a 3-2 decision to the Gophers on November 17 in Providence. Ironically enough, of the two team's nine meetings, two have come during the post-season national tournament, as during the 1998-1999 season, the Gophers earned a 3-2 win over the Bears in the third place game of the AWCHA Tournament. In the 1999-2000 season, Minnesota got the best of the Bears again, winning 4-2 in the championship game.
Brown qualified for the Frozen Four field, by earning the 2002 ECAC-North Championship last Sunday March 17. The Bears defeated ECAC/Ivy foe Dartmouth College in a thrilling 4-3 overtime contest. Brown battled back from a 2-0 deficit to the victory. With the game looking as though Dartmouth would claim another ECAC Title, freshman Katie Guay (Westfield, MA) netted a goal with just over three minutes left in regulation to send the game into another period. Tied at 3-3 , junior co-captain Kim Insalaco (Rochester, NY) scored her 13th goal of the season 8:57 into the overtime period, to give the Bears the win.
