The NCAA automatic berth was invented for teams like Brown.
Returning all the leading scorers from last year's team that took ECAC champion Harvard to double overtime in league semifinals, the Bears were expected to be a serious contender against the triumvirate of Harvard, Dartmouth and St. Lawrence this season. Instead Brown has struggled to sixth place in the ECAC, as the injury bug has bit deep into the team's skin.
Despite the adversity, Brown head coach Digit Murphy is optimistic that her team - with nine Massachusetts natives - will be healthy enough in March in time to make a serious run at the ECAC postseason crown and the NCAA bid that comes with it.
