Providence, RI - After a record-breaking weekend, Brown junior Nicole Stock (Buffalo Grove, IL) was named ECAC Hockey Goaltender of the Week for the second consecutive week and third time this season on Monday. Stock broke Brown records for saves in a game and saves in a period against #7/6 Mercyhurst on Saturday night, finishing the game with 66 stops, after making 39 saves in a 5-2 victory over Niagara on Friday.
Stock's 66 saves against the ranked Lakers topped the mark set by Kirsten Rendell '90, who had 59 saves on Dec. 2, 1989 against New Hampshire. With 27 saves in the first period, Stock broke the previous record of 26, set by Mara Spaulder '85 on March 9, 1985, also against New Hampshire. All four Mercyhurst goals came courtesy of All-American Meghan Agosta, including a fluky shot in the first period that caromed in off of a Brown defenseman and an empty-net goal in the game's final minute. This came after Stock made 39 saves to lead the Bears to a 5-2 win at Niagara, the team's second in three games.
For the weekend, Stock made 105 saves on 110 shots, good for a .955 save percentage and 2.52 goals-against average. She ranks sixth nationally with a .931 save percentage and third with an average of 34.6 saves per game. So far this season, Stock has made at least 30 saves in 13 of her 19 starts, and she has made at least 40 saves four times. Her streak of 27 consecutive starts is the longest for a Brown goaltender since Brown Hall of Famer Ali Brewer '00 started 68 in-a-row from March 7, 1998 to March 25, 2000.
This coming weekend, Stock will likely break Brown's record for saves in a season with a month still to go. Her current total of 663 puts her 18 away from the mark of 681 set by Brewer in her Kazmaier Award-winning 1999-2000 campaign. The Bears will take on Cornell on Friday at 7 p.m. and Colgate on Saturday at 4 p.m. Tickets are available by calling (401) 863-2773.
