Providence, RI - The Brown's women ice hockey team (7-4-0, 4-3-0) snapped a three game series skid, against Providence College (6-3-3, 2-0-0) this evening with a thrilling, 2-1 victory at Meehan auditorium. Senior Kerry Nugent (Andover, MA) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal, with :53 left in the second period for the win and assisted on the Bears first goal of the night.
The first period saw two goals in the first five minutes, with both teams pressing hard offensively trying to get the edge. Freshman Hayley Moore (Wakelfield, MA) got the Bears on the board first, with her first goal of the season and her career. Nugent gave a pass to junior Ashlee Drover (Bay Roberts, NF) at the point, where Drover snapped a shot that Moore redirected past Friar goaltender Amy Thompson for the early 1-0 lead. Providence would answer back three minutes later when Sonny Watrous skated into the Bears zone and slapped a shot past, freshman goalie Stacy Silverman (Wakefield MA) to knot the game at one.
A solid defensive effort and impressive play from Silverman in net kept the score 1-1 throughout the second period. In a late face-off, senior Katie Guay (Westfield, MA) won the draw, giving the puck to Moore who fed it in front to and open Nugent who put the puck past Thomas with :53 left in the second, swinging the momentum to Brown's side going into the third and final period.
Providence put pressure on the Bears defense and had four power play opportunities including a late two man advantage, but Brown's defense stood strong and didn't even let the Friars get a shot off. Silverman was a wall in net, making eleven saves, to preserve the win for the Bears and her first win of the season.
The Bears will return to action Friday, December 3, when they will travel to Union for a weekend double-header against the Dutchwoman.
