Women's Ice Hockey Downed By Providence 5-3 In Mayor's Cup
Nov. 26, 2005
Providence, RI - The Bears (3-6-1) were unable to make up three first period Providence goals, as Brown fell to the Friars 5-3 in the 11th Annual Mayor's Cup at Schneider Arena this evening. Sophomore O'Hara Shipe (Anchorage, AK) came in relief for classmate Stacy Silverman (Wakefield, MA) with 10:24 to go in the opening period after Silverman surrendered three goals. Shipe finished the game with 19 saves.
In a fast moving first period, where four goals were put on the scoreboard in the first ten minutes of the game, Brown found themselves trailing 3-1. Providence struck first 2:12 into the period, cashing in on their first shot on goal for the 1-0 lead. The Bears knotted the score three minutes later when sophomore Heather Lane (London, ONT) took a pass from freshman Savanah Smith (Fort St. John, BC) and one timed it in from the right slot. Silverman had a tough outing, and was relieved by Shipe at the 10:24 mark in the first after the Friar's third goal of the period. Shipe was tested as soon as she stepped in the crease as the Providence fired seven shots that Shipe turned away keeping the Bears within striking distance.
In a penalty filled second period, that saw only two minutes of five on five hockey, Brown cut the Friar lead to one goal 2:51 into the second frame. Sophomore Hayley Moore (Wakefield, MA) picked up a loose puck in the left face-off circle and fired a shot over the shoulder of Providence's goal minder for Brown's second goal of the evening. After that it was all Providence as the Friars found themselves with a man advantage for four minutes, but could not crack Shipe, as Shipe and the Bear defense stood strong keeping the Friars from putting it back to a two goal game.
The Bears started the final period on a power play, but could not find the back of the net. Providence padded their lead to two goals when Karen Thatcher snuck a shot past Shipe with 15:57 to go in the final period. Brown bounced back later in the period, when Moore who was tied up with two Friar players slid a pass to a wide open senior Keaton Zucker (Gilford, NH) in front of the Providence goal. Zucker took a hard shot that slipped past Jana Bugden, cutting the Friar lead to one goal with 9:08 to go in the game. The Bears pulled Shipe with two minutes to go in the game to get an extra skater on the ice. With the Bears pressuring senior Ashlee Drover (Bay Roberts, NF) fired a shot from the point that was blocked in front of PC's net and bounced out of the offensive zone. The Friars netted an empty netter at 1:31 for the 5-3 victory.
The Bears will return to action when they hit the road and head to Boston for a 7:00 PM face-off with the Huskies of Northeastern.
