Hamilton, N.Y. - Brown picked up an exciting win at Starr Rink on Saturday afternoon, beating Colgate 4-3 to pick up its second ECAC Hockey win of the season. Freshman Paige Pyett (Regina, SK) had a goal and an assist, while junior Andrea Hunter (Fulton, N.Y.) and sophomore Erica Kromm (Naramata, B.C.) had two assists each.
Continuing her excellent play this season, senior goalie Nicole Stock (Buffalo Grove, IL) had 32 saves in the win, and made several key stops down the stretch as Brown held on for the victory. With the win, Brown improves to 2-5-1 overall this season, and 2-4-0 in ECAC Hockey play.
The first period was a wild one, as the offenses came alive for both squads. Colgate opened the scoring early, as senior Elin Brown converted a power play opportunity for the Raiders, giving them a 1-0 lead. Despite the early stage of the game, the power play was already the second one for Colgate, as Brown was called for four penalties in the first eight minutes of the game. The Bears answered back only a few minutes later, however, as junior Sasha Van Muyen (Orillia, ON) tied the game up with a goal of her own. After several shots were deflected, Van Muyen was able to take the puck behind the net, and then circle around to dump it in for the equalizer. Hunter who scored both goals against Cornell, and Pyett were credited with assists on the play.
Colgate capped off an action-packed opening stretch with another score just under seven minutes into the period, as junior Evan Minnick picked up another power play goal for the Raiders. After a relatively quiet period following the goal, Brown struck again with four minutes remaining to tie the game at two. On yet another power play, Pyett fired the puck into net to even the score, the third extra man goal of the period. Kromm assisted on the goal to earn her first point of the season.
The action didn't settle down in the second, as shooters continued to have the hot hand. Colgate regained the lead near the halfway mark, knocking in their third goal after a brief scramble in front of the net which may have screened Stock. Brown continued to show its resiliency, however, as junior Erin Connors (Newburyport, MA) scored with just over three minutes left in the period to tie the game at three apiece. Hunter and Kromm each picked up their second assist of the game on the play, as the Bears continued to shine on the power play.
Defense finally began to assert itself in the final period, as many of the good shots that had been there in the first 40 minutes were taken away. Although there was only one goal in the frame, that was all that the Bears needed, as junior Nicole Brown (Swift Current, SK) picked an opportune time to score her first goal of the season, knocking in the game-winner with nine minutes remaining. Senior Savannah Smith (Fort St. John, B.C.) and sophomore Jenna Dancewicz (Lake Forest, IL) assisted on the score. Although Colgate had its chances later in the period, Stock stood tall in net, and held the Raiders in check for the remainder of the game.
The Bears will be back in action on Friday, November 21, when they return home to face Niagara at 7 p.m.
