Providence, RI - The women's hockey defeated Niagara 5-2 in the team's season-opener at Meehan Auditorium Friday night. The Bears scored three goals in a two minute span in the second half to take a 4-1 lead. Sophomore Jessica Link (Clifton Park, NY) lead Brown with two goals and scored the game-winner, while senior Kim Insalaco (Rochester, NY) and sophomore Kerry Nugent (Andover, MA) notched two assists each on the night.
The Purple Eagles got on the board first at the 4:49 mark when Candice Ceelen scored on a pass from Candice Moxley. Ten minutes later Brown tied the game when freshman Lindsey Glennon (Exeter, NH) netted her first collegiate goal. Follow freshman Myria Heinhuis (Chatham, ONT) and sophomore Kerry Nugent (Andover, MA) picked up assists on the goal.
The Bears went on a spectacular run in the second period, scoring three goals within a two minute span. Freshman Margaret Ramsay (Toronto, ONT) gave the Bears the lead for good at the 10:35 mark. Insalaco and senior Cassie Turner (Campbellford, ONT) picked up assists on the play. Brown out-shot Niagara 24-14 in the second period.
Link scored the game-winner 1:15 later to give the Bears a 3-1 edge. The Bears increased their lead to 4-1, 44 seconds later when Turner netted a blast from the point at the 12:34 mark. Insalaco notched her second assist of the night on the play.
Niagara came within two early in the third period when Jennifer Goulet scored on a pass from Teresa Del Monte two minutes into the period. Brown brought the lead back to three when Link notched her second goal of the night at the 11:38. Sophomore Amy McLaughlin (Berlin, MA) picked up the assist on the play.
In goal, senior Pam Dreyer (Eagle River, AK) recorded 20 saves in 60:00 minutes of action.
The Bears will face the Purple Eagles again tomorrow, Saturday Nov. 2, beginning at 3:00 p.m.
