Orono, ME - The women's ice hockey team (1-0-0, 0-0-0) defeated Maine (1-1-1,0-0-0), 1-0 in their season opener this evening in Orono, ME. Sophomore Marie-Pier Desbiens (Bolton-Est, QC) and freshman O'Hara Shipe (Anchorage, AK) split time in the crease for tonight's victory.
After a scoreless first period, the Bears got on the board with 10:36 left in the second on a goal from senior Krissy McManus (Dedham, MA). Senior Amy McLaughlin (Berlin, MA), sent a long pass from deep in the Bears zone, to a streaking McManus at the blue line. McManus carried the puck towards Black Bears' net, lifting a shot top shelf past goalie Rachel Gettings. Shipe made her collegiate debute in net, halfway through the second period to relieve Desbiens. Desbiens finished the game with 12 saves in 29:24 minutes of play. With nine seconds left in the second, senior Jessica Link (Clifton Park, NY) scored a power play goal when a shot by Myria Heinhuis (Chatham, ONT) rebounded to Link, who put the puck past Gettings for Brown's second goal of the night.
On a power play early in the third, junior Ashlee Drover (Bay Roberts, NF) received a pass from senior Katie Guay (Wakefield, MA) and took a hard shot in which Maine's goalie couldn't control and bounced the rebound out to senior Kerry Nugent (Andover, MA) who pushed the puck past Gettings for Brown's third and final goal. Nugent put back the shot rounding out the scoring for the Bears. Shipe finished the game with 11 saves to preserve the shutout.
The Bears will travel to University of New Hampshire to take on the Wildcats Sunday, October 31, at 2:00.
