Canton, NY - The Brown women's hockey team defeated St. Lawrence University 3-1 in Game Three of the ECAC Quarterfinals to move on to the ECAC Semifinals next weekend at Brown's Meehan Auditorium. The Bears took a 1-0 lead in the first period. The Saints then went on to tie the game 1-1 with two minutes left in the first. The game remained tied for just 15 seconds as freshman Karen Thatcher scored to put the Bears back in the lead. Senior goalkeeper Pam Dreyer and the rest of the Bears held off the Saints in the second and third periods while adding an empty net goal with 1:08 remaining to seal the victory 3-1. Dreyer recorded 32 saves in the game, including 15 in the final period. The Bears will play top ranked Harvard on Saturday Mar. 15 in the ECAC Semifinals, hosted by Brown.
Brown got on the board first at the 8:45 mark when senior Kim Insalaco went top shelf for her seventh goal of the season. Sophomore Katie Guay and freshman Ashlee Drover picked up assists on the play. St. Lawrence tied the game 1-1 nine minutes later when sophomore Whitney Carbone one-timed the puck past senior goalkeeper Pam Dreyer. Freshman Emilie Berlinguette and junior Lindsay Charlebois earned assists on the play. The Bears did not waste anytime taking back the lead though as they scored just 15 seconds later at the 18:15 mark. Freshman Karen Thather scored her 11th goal of the season with senior Cassie Turner and Insalaco tallying the assists. Dreyer recorded 13 stops in the period as the Saints out-shot the Bears 14-9.
Brown held onto the lead through the final 40 minutes of play and sealed the victory with an empty net goal with 1:08 remaining. Thatcher scored the empty net goal unassisted, her 12th of the season. Dreyer made several crucial saves in the final period as the Saints out-shot the Bears 15-6.
