Women's Hockey Falls 4-1 To St. Lawrence In Game One Of ECAC Quarterfinals

Canton, NY - The Brown women's hockey team dropped a 4-1 decision to #6 St. Lawrence in game one of the ECAC Quarterfinals Friday night at Appleton Arena. After the Bears tied the game 1-1 in the second period, the Saints went on to score three unanswered goals to take the win 4-1. Brown falls to 12-13-4 overall and 9-7-1 in the ECAC on the season.

After nearly 18 minutes of scoreless action, the Saints got on the board when freshman Emilie Berlinguette chipped in a loose puck off a rebound. Junior Ricki-Lee Doyle picked up the assist for taking the initial shot. Both teams recorded eight shots on goal in the period.

Brown tied the game nearly 14 minutes into the second period when freshman Karen Thatcher stole the puck from the sideline and passed across the net to sophomore Katie Guay who one-timed it past Saints goalie Rachel Barrie. Senior goalkeeper Pam Dreyer made several impressive saves to hold the Saints off. However, St. Lawrence grabbed the lead with just six seconds left in the second period on a power play goal. Senior Trisha Powers knocked the puck in off a scramble in front of the net. Berlinguette picked up the assist, her second point of the game.

St. Lawrence increased its lead to 3-1 when sophomore Rebecca Russell found the back of the net just 1:39 into the final period. Junior Gina Kingsbury and freshman Laurie Ross earned assists on the play. The Saints took a three goal lead shortly after at 3:15 when Powers netted her second goal of the game. Kingsbury and Russell picked up their second points of the game with the assists. Dreyer recorded 34 saves in the loss.

Game two between the Bears and the Saints will be tomorrow, Saturday Mar. 8 at 7 p.m.
