Providence, RI - Behind Brown's first line of senior Keaton Zucker (Gilford, NH) and sophomores Hayley Moore (Wakefield, MA) and Rylee Olewinski, (Burr Ridge, IL) the Bears grab a one game edge in the ECACHL Quarterfinals, with the 4-2 win over the Big Green this evening at Meehan Auditorium. The three line mates each recorded one of the Bear's first three goals, to give Brown the three goal edge with 14:28 to go in the second.
The Bears jumped on the scoreboard, when Moore netted her 22 goal of the year on a Bear power play with 5:09 to go in the opening period. Junior Kathryn Moos (Wayzata, MN) picked up a puck on the far side boards left by freshman Frances Male (Toronto, ONT) before a quick line switch. Moore skated up from behind the Dartmouth net and took the pass from Moos and fired a low wrist shot that beat Dartmouth's Carli Clemis for the 1-0 lead. The Bears dominated the opening period out shooting the Big Green 12-1.
As action began to pick up on both sides of the ice in the second, as five goals were scored and six penalties were called, the Bears won the shoot out, netting three to Dartmouth's two. While killing a Male interference penalty early in the second, Zucker pressured the Big Green defense and came away with the puck behind the Dartmouth net. Zucker skated around the near side post and ripped a shot past Clemis, padding the Bears lead with 16:10 to go in the second.
A little over two minutes later Olewinski fired a back hand shot past Clemis for what proved to be the game winning goal 5:32 into the second. After freshman Merryl Edington-Hryb (Delta, BC) fired a shot just wide of the net Zucker skated to the corner with the puck and found Olewinski skating down the left slot.
Dartmouth cut the deficit to two goals on a power play goal by Maggie Kennedy, who put a rebound shot past sophomore goalie O'Hara Shipe (Anchorage, AK).
The Bears answered back less then a minute later when Zucker put in her second goal of the game with 12:24 to go in the period. Moore and senior Myria Heinhuis (Chatham, ONT) were credited with assists on the play.
Dartmouth tacked on a goal later in the period but could not over come spotting Brown three early goals.
Shipe was solid in net in the third stopping all 11 shots by the Big Green, including three odd man rushes to solidify the victory. The second year goalie finished the game with 21 saves.
The Bears and Big Green will battle again tomorrow afternoon at 4:00 p.m. in game two of the ECACHL Quarterfinals.
