Eight Women's Icers Score In 9-1 Win Over Cornell

Ithaca, NY - The Brown women's hockey team defeated Cornell 9-1 to close out the 2002-03 regular season Saturday afternoon in Ithaca, NY. Fourteen different players tallied points in the win and eight recorded goals. Brown finishes the regular season with a 12-12-4 overall and 9-6-1 ECAC record. Freshman Karen Thatcher led Brown with five points on a goal and four assists. Sophomore Jessica Link tallied four points on two goals and two assists.
The Bears jumped out to a 3-0 lead by the end of the first period as they did not allow Cornell one shot on goal. Senior Cassie Turner got the scoring started at the 2:36 mark. Freshman Karen Thatcher and senior Kim Insalaco earned assists on the play. Junior Marguerite McDonald tallied her first goal of the season two minutes later to give Brown a 2-0 lead. Freshman Myria Heinhuis and senior Kate Kenny recorded assists on the play. The assist was Kenny's first point of the season. Brown added another goal late in the period as senior Courtney Johnson notched her 12th goal of the year with sophomore Jessica Link and freshman Ashlee Drover picking up assists. The Bears out-shot the Big Red 19-0 in the period.
Brown increased its lead to 7-0 by the end of 40 minutes of play. Drover tallied her second point of the night when she went top shelf for her second goal of the season. Freshman Keaton Zucker and Link recorded assists. The Bears took a 5-0 lead just over five minutes later when Insalaco tallied her sixth goal of the season to move into ninth place on Brown's all-time scoring list with 121 career points. Thatcher and senior Mandy McCurdy earned assists on the play. Zucker gave Brown a 6-0 lead at the 9:01 mark of the period. Heinhuis and junior Katie Lafleur tallied assists. The Bears recorded a shorthanded goal late in the period to take a 7-0 lead. Link scored with Thatcher earning her third assist of the game.
Cornell finally got on the board three minutes into the final period. Senior Brook Bestwick scored with senior Lindsay Murao and Freshman Jen Munofen earning assists. Brown added two more goals in the last five minutes of the game to take the win 9-1. Thatcher tallied her first goal of the game with sophomore Amy McLaughlin and Insalaco earning assists. Insalaco now has 122 career points. Closing out the Brown scoring was Link, recording her fourth point of the game with the goal and Thatcher and Guay tallying the assists.
