Providence, RI - Friday night will be remembered particularly fondly by Head Coach Digit Murphy and junior forward Hayley Moore (Wakefield, MA), as the pair hit career milestones in a 6-0 victory by the Brown women's ice hockey team (9-15-2, 5-13-1 ECACHL) over Union (4-23-0, 0-19-0) at Meehan Auditorium. Murphy became just the third head coach in collegiate women's ice hockey history to win 300 games, while Moore became the 20th Bear to tally 100 career points with an assist in the first period.
Moore and linemates Savannah Smith (Fort St. John, BC) and Andrea Hunter (Fulton, NY) all finished with four points on the evening. Smith and Hunter had a pair of goals and a pair of assists each, while Moore had three assists to go with one goal. Moore, the Bears' leading scorer with 34 points on 20 goals and 14 assists, finished the evening with 103 career points, passing three players to move into 17th all-time at Brown. She also extended her point streak to 13 games. Hunter and Smith each had their third-consecutive multi-point game. Sophomore goaltender Nicole Stock (Buffalo Grove, IL) had 15 saves to pick up her third shutout of the season and bring her record to 8-7-2.
Hunter scored what would be the game-winner just 3:04 into the game. A Brown pass deflected off of a Union skater right to Hunter, who skated in on goal untouched and fired a shot past the goaltender. Smith doubled the margin on the first of her two power-play goals at 18:51 in the period, cashing in on a pass from Moore, who had worked the puck in from the goaltender's right side with Hunter.
The Bears put the game out of reach in the second period. Moore made the score 3-0 just 35 seconds after the intermission, breaking up the ice off of passes from Smith and senior defenseman Krystal Strassman (Madison, WI) and flipping a nifty backhand past Union goaltender Amanda Hanson. Hunter picked up her second score of the night at 6:26 taking a pass from Moore and sending a laser into the right side of the net from deep in the left faceoff circle. Senior forward Kathryn Moos (Wayzata, MN) made it 5-0 at 18:03, when she deflected a pass from sophomore defenseman Lindsay Wilde (Billerica, MA) into the net. Wilde picked up her first point of the season on the play, with junior assistant captain Rylee Olewinski (Burr Ridge, IL) also grabbing a helper. Smith finished the scoring with another power-play score at 14:31 in the third period, again with assists from Moore and Hunter.
For the game, the Bears outshot their guests, 45-15. Bruno capitalized on two of six power-play opportunities, while Union was 0-4.
Brown will play its final home game tomorrow, as the puck drops for Senior Day against RPI (12-17-1, 8-10-1) at 4 p.m. After the game, the team's four members of the Class of 2007 will be honored in a special ceremony.
