Bears Come Out On Top 1-0, Over Vermont
Feb. 5, 2005
Burlington, VT - The Bears only needed one goal to come away with today's 1-0, win over the University of Vermont this afternoon in Burlington, VT. Marie-Pier Desbiens and O'Hara Shipe split the shut out stopping all 14 shots that came towards Brown's net.
In a scoreless first period, the Bears controlled the flow of the game having the puck in the Catamounts zone for most of the opening period, but was unable to muster a goal. Brown's best chance came with less than seven minutes remaining in the period when senior Amy McLaughlin (Berlin, MA) shot the puck behind Vermont's net, where junior Keaton Zucker (Guilford, NH) collected the puck uncovered but Catamounts goaltender slide quickly to the left stopping the shot and keeping the game scoreless.
Brown's penalty kill continues to be dominant not allowing a shot on UVM's man advantage mid-way through the second. The Catamounts could not get set as the Brown penalty killers cut off passing lanes and skated down every free puck. While short handed senior Jessica Link (Clifton Park, NY) intercepted a Vermont's pass at mid ice and skated into the zone, but pulled the shot wide having Brown still looking for their first goal. The Bears finally open up the scoring with 8:37, left in the period on a power play goal by McLaughlin, her fourth of the season. Brown took full advantage of the man advantage throwing a flurry of shots at Cote and the Catamounts defense. With tic-tac-toe passing Link and sophomore Kathryn Moos (Wayzata, MN) were able to draw the defenders out, freeing up McLaughlin in the middle taking the Moos pass and sliding it in for Brown's first goal. With 10:48 remaining in the period freshman O'Hara Shipe (Anchorage AK) relieved sophomore Marie Pier Desbiens (Bolton-Est, QC) in net. Desbiens finished up with six saves.
The Bears continued dominating the game through out the third keeping Vermont from putting anything offensively together. The Catamounts pulled Cote with just over a minute to go in the game to add an extra skater. The Bear defense and Shipe stood strong keeping UVM off the board and preserving the 1-0 win.
Brown will return home next weekend when they face Mercyhurst for a weekend series with Lakers beginning on Friday, February 11, for a 7:00 pm face-off.
