Bears Fall to #1 Harvard, 4-1
Feb. 1, 2008
Providence, RI - In a Friday matinee at Meehan Auditorium, the Brown women's ice hockey team (3-15-4, 2-10-3 ECAC Hockey) fell to the nation's top-ranked team, Harvard (18-1-0, 15-0-0 ECAC Hockey), 4-1. Senior captain Rylee Olewinski (Burr Ridge, IL) had Brown's lone goal late in the third.
Kathryn Farni got the Crimson a 1-0 lead at 13:37 in the first. With the teams skating their second four-on-four of the opening period, Harvard goaltender Christina Kessler made a save and pushed the puck out to Farni. The sophomore defenseman did the rest, skating the puck all the way up the ice and using a nifty deke to beat Nicole Stock (Buffalo Grove, IL) five-hole. Just under four minutes later, freshman Liza Ryabkina doubled the Crimson lead, taking a short pass in front of Stock from Anna McDonald and wrapping the puck between the goalie's left pad and the post.
Randi Griffin made it a 3-0 game at 8:28 in the second, collecting the rebound off of a Kate Buesser shot and beating Stock. Kati Vaughn added another Harvard goal in the third period on a power play, sniping the top left corner at 4:03. With the Bears facing a shutout, Olewinski got the Bears on the board with 1:20 remaining in regulation. After a shot by senior captain Hayley Moore (Wakefield, MA), Olewinski grabbed the rebound on the right side, lifting the puck over Kessler.
For the game, Harvard held a 35-26 shot advantage. Kessler made 25 stops to pick up the win, while Stock had 31 saves.
After the game, the Bears immediately hit the road for their Saturday afternoon tilt with Dartmouth up in Hanover, N.H. game time will once again be 4 p.m.
