Providence, RI - The women's ice hockey team suffered a tough 4-3, loss this afternoon at the hands of the Princeton Tigers at the Meehan Auditorium. This afternoon's contest was a seesaw battle having the Tigers come out on top with a late goal. The Bears are now 10-9-2 on the season overall and 7-6-1 in the ECACHL.
After a scoreless first period that saw both teams with opportunities Princeton's Becky Stewart opened up the scoring 1:44 into the second period. Brown would answer back when sophomore Kathryn Moos (Wayzata, MN) shot the puck past Princeton's Roxanne Gaudiel to knotting the game at one. Senior Amy McLaughlin (Berlin, MA) took the puck at the point for Brown and found classmate Jessica Link (Clifton Park, NY) behind the Tiger's net unmarked. Link fed the puck to Moos waiting at the top of the crease where she smacked it in for her sixth goal of the season. Princeton once again took the lead on a power play goal by Dina McCumber sending the Bears into the second intermission trailing by one.
For the beginning part of the third period Brown couldn't get the puck out of their zone and saw the game begin to slip away. With eleven minutes to go in the game freshman Hayley Moore (Wakefield, MA) intercepted the puck deep in the Tiger zone and found senior Kerry Nugent (Andover, MA) skating down the center of the ice. Nugent one timed the pass in for Brown's second goal. The Bears would go ahead less then three minutes later, when Link took a Keaton Zucker (Gilford, NH) pass and slide it across the line, lighting the lamp and giving the Bears a 3-2 lead. But, the Tigers would not quit and tied the game with under seven minutes remaining in the period when Liz Keady knocked the puck past freshman O'Hara Shipe (Anchorage, AK) for her eighth goal of the season. Shipe finished the game with 24 saves. Princeton would go ahead with under three minutes to go when Kim Pearce slapped the puck past Shipe giving the lead back to the Tigers. With under a minute remaining in the game the Bears pulled Shipe to get an extra skater on the ice. Junior Ashlee Drover (Bay Roberts, NF) skated into the Tiger zone unmarked and shot a rocket over the shoulder of Gaudiel that ricocheted off the post keeping the Bears still looking for the equalizer. With forty seconds to go, Link gave a centering feed to Moos who was looking at a wide open net, but was immediately tied up by Tiger defenders unable to get the shot off.
The Bears will return to action Friday, February 4th when they travel to Dartmouth for a 7:00 start.
