Providence, RI - Sophomore goaltender Nicole Stock (Buffalo Grove, IL) made 33 saves to pick up her team's first shutout of the year, as the Brown women's ice hockey team (4-11-2, 2-9-1) toppled Clarkson (13-8-2, 5-5-1) by a 1-0 count. Freshman Erin Connors (Newburyport, MA) scored the Bears' lone goal at 15:34 in the first period, then Stock and the Brown defense held on for the win. The Bears are now unbeaten in their last four games, going 3-1-0 in that span.
Connors was the beneficiary of some nifty passing by junior captain Hayley Moore (Wakefield, Mass.) on the Bears' goal. Moore stole the puck in the Brown zone and skated out on a breakaway with Connors. With one defender to beat, Moore passed from the right side, in front of the defender, to Connors, who buried a shot in the top right corner from the left side for her second goal of the year. With the assist, Moore now has a point in her last four games. She leads the Bears with 15 points (10g, 5a).
Stock and the Bears defense weathered some intense pressure from the Golden Knights, especially in the second half of the third period. Beginning with a sequence in which Clarkson hit the post twice right around the midway point of the period, the visitors put constant pressure on the Brown zone, lapsing only when they needed to kill off 1:08 of a five-on-three advantage for the Bears. For the game, Clarkson had a 33-18 shot advantage.
Saturday, the Bears will face a difficult task in keeping their unbeaten streak alive, when they host #7 St. Lawrence. The puck drops at 4 p.m. at Meehan Auditorium.
