Bears Shut Out Quinnipiac 4-0 In ECACHL Match-Up
Jan. 6, 2006
Providence, RI - In an offensive explosion, the women's ice hockey team (5-7-1, 3-3-1) shut out the Quinnipiac Bobcats (6-11-4, 2-7-2) 4-0, at Meehan Auditorium this evening. Sophomore Hayley Moore (Wakefield, MA) and freshman Frances Male (Toronto, ONT) lead the way for the Bears each recording a goal and assist in the win.
Moore opened up the scoring just 2:38 into the game sliding the puck past Quinnipiac's Connie Craig for the early lead. Junior Lauren Deeb (Menands, NY) intercepted a Bobcat clear at the blueline and found senior Keaton Zucker (Gilford, NH) along the right side boards. Zucker skated along the boards and gave a centering feed to Moore, netting her eighth goal of the season. The Brown defense pressured Quinnipiac hard in the opening period, holding the Bobcats to two shots.
Brown padded their lead at the 12:57 mark of the second period, when Male recorded her second goal of the season, on a Brown power play. Senior Myria Heinhuis (Chatham, ONT) took a pass from junior Kathryn Moos (Wayzata, MN) and fired a hard slap shot from the point that was pushed away by Craig and bounced to a wide open Male on the left side of the crease, where she fired in the back of the net for the 2-0 lead. The Bobcats began to pressure the Brown defense and sophomore goalie Stacy Silverman (Wakefield, MA). After making a tough left padded save on a hard wrist shot by Quinnipiac's Ashley Jaffray, Silverman quickly moved into position and made a stop on Karrah Stephen's one timer before it crossed the line, keeping the Bobcats off the board.
With under a minute remaining in the second sophomore Rylee Olewinski (Burr Ridge, IL) posted her first goal of the season on a scramble in front of Quinnipiac's goal. Moore skated in and threw the puck infront of the Bobcat's goal where freshman Lindsay Wilde (Billerica, MA) picked it up and made a quick move to pull Craig out of position and slid the puck to Olewinski who was crashing the right side of the net.
The scoring kept coming for Brown in the third, as freshman Savanah Smith (Fort St. John, BC) tallied her first collegiate goal with 12:54 remaining in the game. Senior Margaret Ramsay (Toronto, ONT) and Male recorded the assists on the goal. Silverman recorded the shut out stopping all 24 shots.
Brown will wrap up the weekend ECACHL play, when they host Princeton, tomorrow, Saturday afternoon, for a 4:00 PM match-up.
