Shannon Kennedy enters her first season as assistant coach of the Brown Bears after spending a season with the Union College Dutchwomen. While at Union, Kennedy assisted the head coach in all aspects of coaching both on and off the ice, including recruiting, organizing team travel and facilitating the strength and condition programs.

Before going to Union, Kennedy spent two years as head coach for the St. Louis Park Girls High School hockey team in Minnesota. She led the team to its best finish in the Section Play-offs during that time. Kennedy spent the year before that as the head coach for the St. Louis Park U-15 Youth Association team.

As a player, Kennedy spent a year playing at Colby College then joined her sister Courtney on the University of Minnesota women's hockey team. Kennedy made an immediate impact on the Golden Gophers' squad as she finished her first season tied for 12th nationally in game-winning goals with four and 18th with 24 assists. She helped lead Minnesota to the AWCHA National Championship Semifinal in 1998. Kennedy set career highs that season in assists and game-winning goals, along with 37 points. She was also a Patty Berg Academic Award winner. The following season Kennedy captained Minnesota to an NCAA National Championship. Kennedy earned her bachelor's degree in Foundations of Education from Minnesota in 2001.
