Women’s Hockey Falls in Overtime to RPI, 2-1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Senior Sam Donovan (New Brighton, Minn.) scored a late third period goal to tie the game 1-1 and force overtime, but RPI would skate away with the victory in the extra period, defeating the Brown women's hockey team, 2-1, on Friday night at Meehan Auditorium.

Donovan's goal was a shorthanded tally at 17:23 of the third. The assistant captain caused a turnover in the Bears' defensive end and skated past defenders for her fourth of the season. Donovan increased her point streak to five games with the score, having three goals and four assists in that span.

After a quiet open to the first period, with no team generating a solid scoring chance, Brown (1-11-0, 1-8-0 ECAC) was whistled for the first infraction of the contest at 8:18 and RPI (6-7-4, 3-1-1 ECAC) took advantage. Jaimie Grigsby put the Engineers up 1-0 with a power-play score at 9:03 following two saves by sophomore Calla Isaac (Sherwood Park, Alberta).

Trailing in shots for the first period (16-10), the Bears opened the second with a flurry of strikes, jumping out to a 12-2 advantage halfway through the frame. Brown ended the period with a 17-6 differential in shots but RPI still carried its slim 1-0 lead into the break.

After 15 saves in the first, Isaac was called upon to stop only six shots in the second, while Lovisa Selander turned away 17 shots for the Engineers and upped her total to 27.

Both teams fought off an infraction at the beginning of the third as the game remained at 1-0. With time running down in regulation, Donovan forced a turnover in the defensive end and skated through the neutral zone and five-holed Selander for the shorthanded game-tying score at 17:23 to eventually force overtime. The Bears again had the period lead in shots for the third at 12-8.

Just 37 seconds into overtime, RPI capitalized and won the ECAC match-up when Marisa Raspa registered the game winner on the first shot of the extra period.

Overall, Brown outshot RPI, 39-31. The Engineers were 1-for-4 in the contest on the power-play while the Bear were 0-for-3. Isaac concluded the game with 29 saves while Selander posted 38.

The Bears are back on the ice at Meehan Auditorium tomorrow, Dec. 2, against Union starting at 3:00 p.m.
