Women’s Hockey Clipped by No. 3/3 Colgate, 5-3

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Brown women's hockey team battled No. 3/3 Colgate on Saturday afternoon at Meehan Auditorium but fell 5-3. Senior Samantha Swanstrom (Ham Lake, Minn.) netted two goals while senior Sam Donovan (New Brighton, Minn.) added a score and freshman Lauren Rippy (Plymouth, Mich.) posted a career-high 34 saves in the contest.

Colgate (13-1-0, 5-1-0 ECAC) built a 4-1 lead in the third period but the Bears were resilient and would chip away, with S. Swanstrom tallying the first goal of the sequence. The Raiders would increase their lead to 5-2 but Brown (1-9-0, 1-7-0 ECAC) again answered with a score, this time from Donovan, however, the Bears would run out of time to do further damage.

The Raiders opened the contest with a 1-0 lead 3:25 into the first with a tally from Annika Zalewski. S. Swanstrom later responded for the Bears at 8:09 with her third goal of the season to tie the game, 1-1. Donovan passed it to sophomore Maybelline Beiring (Calumet, Mich.) near the point who put a shot on goal, where Swanstrom was there to put back the rebound in front with a diving shot.

Colgate regained a 2-1 lead at 17:19 with a power-play goal by Megan Sullivan. The Raiders doubled up on the Bears for shots in the stanza at 14-7.

The Raiders scored the only goal in the second to increase their advantage to 3-1 at 13:45. Both teams had a 5-on-3 in the frame but were not able to produce a goal. Brown went 5-for-5 in the period on the penalty kill while Colgate was 2-for-2.

After Colgate opened the third with a goal at 2:00 for a 4-1 lead (Malia Schneider), S. Swanstrom would add her second of the day, and team-leading fourth at 5:36 to pull the Bears within two (4-2). Colgate looked to pull away again at 14:00 with a goal from Megan Sullivan, her second of the afternoon, but Brown would again fight back to pull within two, with Donovan recording her third of the year at 17:33 with the set-up from junior Cara Najjar (Stoneham, Mass.).

The Bears called a timeout and pulled Rippy at 19:04 and generated two hard shots on goal that were saved by Liz Auby, but were unable to pull closer as the final horn sounded. Each team was 2-for-2 in the period on the penalty kill. Brown held the shot advantage for the stanza at 10-9.

Rippy concluded the game with a career-best 34 saves, which included 12 in the first and 15 in the second, while Auby made 20 stops for Colgate.

With their points in the contest, Donovan and S. Swanstrom registered their second multi-point effort of the season. Swanstrom has tallied a point in six of her last eight games.

Colgate ended the contest going 1-for-9 on the power play while Brown was 0-for-4. In the last four games the Bears' penalty kill has fought off 19 of 21 penalties, with the last two games coming against ranked opponents, No. 8/8 Cornell and No. 3/3 Colgate.

Brown will take a break from ECAC play and will next travel to Boston University on Tuesday, Nov. 28 for a 7:00 p.m. non-conference game at Walter Brown Arena.
