PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior captain Lauren Vella scored on an assist from senior assistant captain Kaitlyn Keon in the third period as Brown University women's hockey fell to No. 9 Clarkson University, 5-1, at Meehan Auditorium on Friday night.
The Bears (0-3-0, 0-1-0 ECAC) played evenly with the defending national champion Golden Knights (7-3-0, 2-0-0 ECAC) in the second and third periods with the two teams skating to a 1-1 draw in those two stanzas.
On the hosts' goal, Keon (Toronto, Ontario) controlled the puck behind the right side of the net on the power play and passed to Vella (Staten Island, N.Y.) who turned 360 degrees at the bottom of the right faceoff circle and slotted a shot into the goal.
Vella posted her first goal of the season and the ninth of her career on the play while Keon tallied her second assist of the young campaign and the 11th of her career.
Savannah Harmon recorded a goal and two assists for Clarkson while Shannon MacAulay, Olivia Howe, Daniella Matteucci, and Brielle Bellerive each netted one goal.
Brown sophomore goaltender Monica Elvin (Oakland, Calif.) played in the second and third periods, stopping 23 shots and allowing just one goal. Freshman Julianne Landry (Hanover, Mass.) totaled 13 saves in the first period.
Golden Knight goalie Shea Tiley made 18 saves to improve to 7-3-0 on the season.
Clarkson scored four goals in the first period with MacAulay opening the scoring 1:54 into the game on her eighth goal of the season. Bellerive pushed the visitors' lead to 2-0 at the 3:41 mark while Harmon and Matteucci charted goals later in the period with Matteucci's tally coming on the power play.
Brown responded in the second period, out-shooting the visitors, 8-5, and notching the frame's only goal. Howe added a goal for Clarkson early in the third period.
