Women’s Hockey Dropped by Colgate in Overtime, 3-2
HAMILTON, N.Y. – Senior Vanessa Welten (Crysler, Ontario) potted the tying goal in the third period to force overtime, but Colgate's Taylor Volpe fired in the game-winner with 45 seconds left to play to give the Raiders a 3-2 win over the Brown women's hockey team in ECAC Hockey action at Starr Rink on Friday. The contest was the ninth overtime decision for the Bears this season, tying the program record set by the 2011-12 team.
Welten's goal was her first of the season for Brown (2-15-5, 1-11-3 ECAC), while sophomore Ariana Rucker (Oakton, Va.) scored a second-period goal to cut the Colgate (6-19-2, 3-12-0 ECAC) lead to 2-1. Senior Jennifer Nedow (Brockville, Ontario) and juniors Janice Yang (Westport, Conn.) and Brittany Moorehead (Clinton, N.Y.) each picked up an assist in the setback.
Senior goalie Aubree Moore (Bowie, Md.) made 27 saves to become the first Brown goalie to eclipse the 2,000 career saves mark since Nicole Stock finished her tenure with a program-record 2,849 stops in 2009.
For the Raiders, Melissa Kueber gave her team a 1-0 lead late in the first period and Megan Wickens extended the gap to 2-0 with a second-period marker. Volpe supplied the game-winner, while Miriam Drubel assisted on the final two tallies. Ashlynne Rando made 16 stops in net to help snap Colgate's six-game losing streak.
Brown returns to action tomorrow at No. 6/6 Cornell in Ivy League and ECAC Hockey play at 4 p.m.
