Yang’s Two Goals Lift Women’s Hockey to 3-3 Tie at Dartmouth

HANOVER, N.H. – Junior Janice Yang (Westport, Conn.) fired in a pair of goals to register her first multiple-goal game since 2012 and push the Brown women's hockey team (1-13-4, 0-8-2 ECAC) to a 3-3 tie against Dartmouth in ECAC and Ivy League action at Thompson Arena on Saturday. The draw snaps a three-game losing skid for the Bears, while the Big Green move to 4-12-1 overall and 3-7-1 in ECAC play.

Yang takes the team lead and sets a single-season career high with six goals on the year. Freshman Erin Conway (Jackson, Mich.) assisted on both of Yang's markers, while junior Sarah Robson (Mississauga, Ontario) reached the 10-point plateau with an assist and a second half goal that gave Brown a 2-1 lead.

Senior goalie Aubree Moore (Bowie, Md.) turned in a 38-save performance, including 13 stops in the first period and four in overtime. The Bears plastered the net with 28 shots on goal for a season high and the most in a contest since rattling off 38 shots in a 4-2 loss against Maine on Jan. 5, 2013.

Kennedy Ottenbreit broke the scoreless tie at 7:32 in the second period, potting a power play goal for the lone man-up conversion on a combined 16 opportunities for the two squads. A melee for the puck against the left boards found Olivia Whitford in control at the point, and Whitford laced a sharp pass to Ottenbreit with her back to the net for the backhanded score.

Yang struck back 2:20 later, however, on a point-blank deflection from the right side. Robson stole the puck behind the Dartmouth net, skated a full rink's width from left to right and fired a shot off one skate, allowing Yang to tip in the tying marker.

Robson found herself on the scoring end 39 seconds into the third period and one-timed a pass from junior Kaitlyn Keon (Toronto, Ontario) to put the Bears ahead 2-1. The lead lasted just under three minutes, however, and Mackenzie St. Onge knotted the score at 2-2 by scavenging Catherine Berghuis's rebound in the lower right corner of the net.

Midway through the period, Lindsey Allen reclaimed the lead for the Big Green by crashing in and flushing her own rebound on the tail end of a 2-on-1 breakaway. A sliding Brown defender knocked the net off in an attempt to block the puck, but Allen got the shot off just in time to register the go-ahead tally.

Yang had another quick answer for the visitors and tied the game at 3-3 on an acrobatic goal at 10:23. The junior forward raced down the left wing and went head-to-head with her defender, who slid headfirst to break up the play. Yang hurdled the attempted defensive maneuver and landed face down on the ice, hanging on just long enough to poke a shot past Dartmouth goalie Lindsay Holdcroft.

Conway managed the only shot for the Bears in the extra period, while Brown survived the final 1:05 shorthanded to squeeze out the 3-3 tie.

Brown returns to Meehan on Friday, Jan. 17, when the Bears host St. Lawrence in ECAC action at 7 p.m.
