PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior Janice Yang (Westport, Conn.) scored a third period goal for her second marker in as many games to get the Brown women's hockey team within a goal of Colgate, but the Raiders held on to hand the Bears a 3-2 defeat in ECAC Hockey action at Meehan Auditorium on Saturday.
Freshman Maddie Woo (Plymouth, Minn.) added an assist for her first collegiate helper for Brown (1-11-3, 0-7-1 ECAC). Colgate (4-13-2, 2-8-0 ECAC) snaps a seven-game winless streak and picks up its second conference victory of the season.
Junior Kaitlyn Keon (Toronto, Ontario) tallied the game's first goal on assists from sophomore Hunter Davis (Clifton Park, N.Y.) and Woo. At 14:13 in the first period, Woo flew up the right wing and Davis fired a pass from the point to Keon, who poked a backhanded shot past Colgate goalie Brittany Brooks' glove side.
Prior to Keon's marker, Brown senior goalie Aubree Moore (Bowie, Md.) preserved a scoreless tie by stopping two rapid fire shots by Melissa Kueber and Taylor Volpe, who attacked the net from close range at 6:55. Moore finished with 28 saves on the evening.
Less than two minutes after the Bears seized the lead, Rachel Walsh pounced on a rebound to score a power play goal after Miriam Drubel's shot from the left face off circle sizzled through a screen in front of the crease.
Taylor Craig extended the Colgate lead to 2-1 early in the second period, knocking in a rebound after a blue line pass from Katie Case and a blocked shot by Aimee DiBella. The Bears' best chance to tie the game came by way of a Lauren Vella (Staten Island, N.Y.) wrist shot from the point that sailed wide left off the board. Junior Sarah Robson (Mississauga, Ontario) tried to sneak in the rebound, but Brooks closed the gap on her stick side to foil the scoring opportunity and pick up one of her 14 saves.
Volpe used a slick pullback maneuver from behind the net to score the eventual game-winning goal at 13:58 on a power play in the second period. The senior forward gathered a rebound off the boards and skated toward the crease, faking a pass to the middle before skidding to a halt and flicking a wrist shot in the bottom left corner of the net.
Midway through the third period, Kueber had a chance to pad the Raiders' lead, but Moore flashed the leather to swipe a wide open shot out of the air and keep Brown in the game. Brown freshman Erin Conway (Jackson, Mich.) had a scoring chance robbed by an equally daring goalie move, as Brooks sprawled to glove Conway's shot on the tail end of an all-alone breakaway.
Yang connected at 16:09 on feeds from Conway and sophomore Ariana Rucker (Oakton, Va.) to cut the Colgate lead to 3-2 with under four minutes left in regulation, but the Raider defense forced Brown to pull Moore for the final 1:39 in hopes of tying the game. Loose pucks gave way to empty net scoring chances for Colgate, but senior Samantha Woodward (Lexington, Mass.) and Yang both laid out to block shots and protect the unmanned net in the finals minutes of play. Despite the Brown effort, the Raiders held on for the 3-2 decision.
Brown hits the ice again for a pair of Ivy League contests next weekend, facing off at Harvard on Friday and Dartmouth on Saturday.
