CANTON, N.Y. – Sophomore Ariana Rucker (Oakton, Va.) notched her second goal of the weekend but a rapid-fire St. Lawrence offense dealt the Brown women's hockey team a 5-1 defeat in ECAC Hockey action at Appleton Arena on Saturday. The Bears drop to 1-2-1 overall and 0-1-1 in ECAC play, while the Saints climb to 4-6-0 and 3-1-0 in league competition.
Alex Moore struck twice for St. Lawrence, potting the game's first marker on a first-period power play and scoring again in the second to put the Saints up 3-0. Mel Desrochers assisted on the opening goal, nabbed a second period goal and helped on the fifth St. Lawrence tally, while Rylee Smith racked up three assists to fill out the St. Lawrence trio with three points apiece.
An interference call at 11:44 in the first found Brown shorthanded and Alex Moore took advantage, sending home a shot on assists from Smith and Desrochers. Minutes later, Brooke Webster deposited what proved to be the game-winner and pushed the Saints ahead 2-0 after one period.
The Bears fought for shots on goal but came up with just four in the first and seven in the third, while Moore doubled her goal total for the night by flushing a rebound at 14:27 in the second to make it a 3-0 game. Desrochers then put her squad up 4-0 when she knocked in a loose puck in front of the crease with 58 seconds left in the period.
Rucker spoiled the shutout in the third period on an assist from junior Brittany Moorehead (Clinton, N.Y.), but Abbey McRae answered with the fifth St. Lawrence goal of the evening at 16:31 to put the game out of reach.
Senior goalie Aubree Moore (Bowie, Md.) made 28 saves in the setback to lift her season total to 167 stops in just four contests. Carmen MacDonald stopped 17 of 18 shots sent her way for the Saints, who outshot the Bears 33-18.
