Women’s Ice Hockey Edged by RIT in Season Opener, 2-1
ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Junior Kaitlyn Keon (Toronto, Ontario) scored a second-period goal to force a 1-1 tie, but the Rochester Institute of Technology took the lead permanently in the third period to hand Brown a 2-1 loss in the Bears' season opener at Ritter Arena on Friday evening. Brown falls to 0-1-0 while the Tigers improve to 4-3-0 overall.
The Bears rattled off six shots within the first five minutes of play and held strong in the defensive zone as seniors Jennifer Nedow (Brockville, Ontario) and Vanessa Welten (Crysler, Ontario) blocked RIT shots, but it was the Tigers that struck first on a power play goal by Celeste Brown at 17:10.
Keon knotted the score at 1-1 just 41 seconds into the second period on an assist by Janice Yang (Westport, Conn.), but the Tigers took control and fired 10 unanswered shots to put Moore to the test. The senior co-captain notched 17 saves in the period to preserve a 1-1 tie into the final stanza.
A team penalty on the Bears in the 18th minute of the second period carried over into the third, and RIT quickly reclaimed the lead on Celeste Brown's second power play goal of the game off feeds from Cassie Clayton and Mackenzie Stone. Three minutes later, the Bears went on a power play of their own after a Tigers hooking penalty, but the hosts survived a quartet of Brown shots on net to maintain the one-goal lead.
Brown was outshot by a 34-19 margin in the setback and served eight minutes on four infractions. Freshman Erin Conway (Jackson, Mich.) won a team-best nine faceoffs for the Bears, while the Tigers held a 28-20 faceoff advantage overall.
The two squads reconvene in a non-conference rematch tomorrow at 3 p.m.
