Brown’s Offense Explodes as Bears Top Sacred Heart 10-0 in Season-Opener
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown did something it had not done since 2003, scoring 10 goals in a game in the team's season-opener against Sacred Heart on Saturday afternoon at Meehan Auditorium. The Bears were lead by senior co-captain Katelyn Landry (Belmont, Mass.), who netted a hat-trick, which helped Bruno to a 10-0 shutout of the Pioneers. It was the team's first 10-goal game since Nov. 18, 2003, in a 10-1 win at Quinnipiac, and first shutout since a 1-0 win against RPI on Nov. 13 last season.
The first goal of the game proved to be all the Bears (1-0) would need as nice pass by rookie Janice Yang (West Port, Conn.) found the stick of Landry in front of the net. Landry then put it home, passed the stick side of the Sacred Heart (0-4) goalie, just 3:39 into the first period.
Brown went on to tally four goals in the first frame, with all coming less than 10 minutes into the game.
The Bears got its second at 7:23 in the first. A pile in front of the net allowed the Brown attackers to shield the goalie, as Landry picked up her second goal of the game. Yang also registered her second assist of the afternoon, while rookie Shannon Flatley (Toronto, Ontario) tallied the first point of her young career.
Just 1:01 later, last season's leading scorer Laurie Jolin (Lachine, Montreal) used the back of her stick to beat the Pioneer goalie high on the glove side to put Brown up 3-0. Senior classmates Vika Mykolenko (Kharkiv, Ukraine) and Skyelar Siwak (Olds, Alberta) were there for the assists.
Brown made it four in less than 10, 26 seconds later when Siwak scored her first goal and second point of the game. Mykolenko made it an early two-point day, picking up her second assist.
On a 5-on-3 at the start of the second, Brown made it 5-0 as sophomore Emilie Dolan (Montreal West, Quebec) and freshman Lauren Vella (Staten Island, N.Y.) moved the puck around the Sacred Heart zone to find sophomore Jessica Hoyle (Toronto, Ontario), who beat the goalie low on the stick side.
Junior Alena Polenska (Kutna Hora, Czech Republic) tallied her first of the year on a beautiful one-time pass from rookie Brittany Moorehead (Clinton, N.Y.), which she sent high to the stick side. Flatley also picked up a helper on the play.
The Hat trick came out at 14:34 of the second as Landry scored short-handed to put Brown up 7-0. Jolin and senior Paige Pyett (Milestone, Saskatchewan) set up the play with crisp passes through the zone.
Just 23 seconds later, Brown mad it two short-handed goals in-a-row as Dolan took the assist from Yang to put in her second of the afternoon.
Brown faced a five-on-three in the third, but the Bears quickly killed the first, and then the second as sophomore goaltender Aubree Moore (Bowie, Md.) made two saves to keep the Pioneers off the board.
A break away late in third by Hoyle led to the Bears' ninth goal. The sophomore put it on net and forced the goalie to deflect it left, but it was immediately corralled by Dolan, who put it in for her second goal of the day. Polenska found Hoyle to start the break to pick her second point of the day.
Brown tallied number 10 on Jolin's second goal of the day. Dolan and Siwak picked up assists on the play as Dolan led the Bears with a four-point day.
Brown enters its ECAC schedule next weekend when they travel to take on Colgate on Friday, October 28 at 7 p.m., before facing No. 3 Cornell on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 3 p.m.
