PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Facing their second top-three opponent in the past three games, the Bears ran into one of the most potent teams in the country in No. 2 Cornell. The Bears withstood constant offensive pressure for much of the first period, but the Big Red eventually found the back of the net and kept Brown off the board, picking up their 15th win of the year, 3-0.
The opening period started with furious offensive surges from Cornell, but the Bear defense was able to stand up and keep the Big Red off the board.
Brown had a great offensive chance at just under five minutes with a two-on-one breakaway. Sophomore Alena Polenska (Kutna Hora, Czech Republic) led the break and sent a nifty pass to the streaking Katelyn Landry (Belmont, Mass.), but the two just missed on the connection.
Cornell got the first power play opportunity of the game with just over 12 minutes to go in the first period, but again the Brown D withstood the Big Red offensive barrage as sophomore goaltender Katie Jamieson (Waterloo, Ontario) made four saves.
The Big Red got on the board just over a minute after the power play however, as Kendice Ogilvie found the back of the net for her first goal of the year and a 1-0 Cornell lead.
After a boarding call on Cornell with less than 12 minutes in the second, Brown held a player advantage and had two looks which nearly tied up the game. Captain Erica Kromm (Naramata, British Columbia) just missed on a centering pass and rookie Jessica Hoyle (Toronto, Ontario) was stoned by Big Red goalie Lauren Slebodnick.
25 seconds after the Brown power play, Cornell tallied its second goal of the game as Rebecca Johnston was able to sneak one past Jamieson on the left side for her 12th goal of the year.
Brown was called for a body checking penalty 2:57 into the third and a minute later, the Big Red had its third goal of the game. Karlee Overguard was able to find teammate Xandra Hompe near the net who put it for her first career goal.
The Bears hit the road this coming Wednesday, January 12, as Brown starts a five-game road trip at Yale at 7 p.m. From New Haven, the Bears will continue on to Mercyhurst for a two-game set next weekend. Brown's final two games on the trip will come at Clarkson (Jan. 21) and at St. Lawrence (Jan. 22).
