PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown picked up its first ECAC point of the 2010-11 season on Friday night at Meehan Auditorium as the Bears (1-3-1, 0-2-1) tied Union (1-9-1, 0-4-1), 1-1. Defense ruled for most of the game as the two goals in the game came within the first 25 minutes of the matchup.
The Dutchwomen got on the board first when an early power play put Union control in the in Brown zone. Two passes from Lauren Cromartie and Callee Heywood set up Stefanie Johnson for the goal. The Union offense continued to press for much of the first period, especially during their second power play of the frame, but freshman goalie Aubree Moore (Bowie, Md.) was able to make some impressive stops to keep the Dutchwomen from increasing their lead.
The Bears came strong in to start the second period and appeared to be refocused after the first intermission. Just four minutes into the frame, Katelyn Landry (Belmont, Mass.) and Paige Pyett (Milestone, Saskatchewan) combined to find Kelly Griffin (Apex, N.C.), who was just two strides in from the blue line. Griffin powered the pass and towards the net beat the Union goalie high on the glove side to tie the game at one.
The two teams battled throughout the third period but neither team could find the back of the net. Union fired off 11 shot attempts in the final regulation frame but Moore and the Bear defense were able to keep the Dutchwomen off the board.
In overtime, the staunch defense continued as only three total shots were attempted in the period.
