PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown women's hockey team played their home-opener on Saturday against Sacred Heart and picked up their first victory of the year on the strength on sophomore Erica Farrer's (Calgary, Alberta) four-point day. Farrer had two goals and two assists in the Bear's (1-3-0) victory over Sacred Heart (0-7-0).
The two teams felt eachother out for much of the first period but Brown got on the board first when senior Erica Kromm (Naramata, British Columbia) put one past the Sacred Heart keeper on a nice pass from sophomore Laurie Jolin (Lachine, Montreal) at the 14:23 mark.
The Bears increased the lead six minutes into the second period on a power play when freshman Jennifer Nedow (Brockville, Ontario) and Farrer combined to find sophomore Kelly Griffin (Apex, N.C.) for the goal. Sacred Heart was able to respond however as Caitlin Gottwald got an open look in front of the net and put it away.
It was all Brown in the third as the team outshot Sacred Heart 16-6 in the final period. Farrer picked up her first goal of the game on a shorthanded play. The sophomore was able to steal a pass and beat the Pioneer keeper to bring the Bear advantage back to two. Freshman Jessica Hoyle (Toronto, Ontario) scored just two minutes later. Farrer was involved again as she picked up the assist along with freshman Vanessa Welten (Crysler, Ontario).
Farrer put the game away at the 18:00 minute mark when she picked up her second goal and fourth point of the game on the a pretty feed from Hoyle and junior Paige Pyett (Milestone, Saskatchewan).
Sophomore goalie Katie Jamieson was superb in net, making 20 saves.
