Bears Open New Year With 2-0 Win Over Vermont
Brown scored on its first power play of 2010 on Sunday afternoon, as rookie Laurie Jolin tallied an extra man goal to give Bruno a 1-0 lead for most of the game, while fellow freshman Katie Jamieson made 34 saves to pick up the shutout. Senior Sasha Van Muyen added an empty net goal with less than a minute remaining to provide the final margin. With the win, Brown improves to 2-10-3 overall, including an 0-7-3 ECAC Hockey record, while Vermont falls to 5-13-1 on the season.
The game opened without much offense from either side, as the teams combined for just 16 shots on goal during the first 20 minutes, and entered the first intermission with a 0-0 tie. In the second, things continued in similar fashion initially, but after Vermont was called for its only penalty of the game midway through the period, the Bears quickly took advantage.
Senior Nicole Brown took a shot wide of goal, but Jolin was there to pick up the rebound at the far post and knock it back in for the goal with just under three minutes remaining. Brown and sophomore Paige Pyett were credited with assists on the play.
Though Vermont had a number of chances to tie the score in the third, Jamieson was unflappable in her return from the holiday break, stopping every shot by the Catamounts. After Vermont pulled its goalie with 1:30 remaining to gain the extra man advantage, Van Muyen was able to intercept a pass and score unassisted on the empty net, giving Brown a 2-0 win.
The Bears will be back in action next weekend, when they travel to take on Boston University at 4 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
