Brown wrapped up the first half of its season on Saturday afternoon, skating to a 5-0 loss at the #10 Cornell Big Red, one of the top teams in ECAC Hockey this season. Rookie goalie Katie Jamieson made 35 saves, but it wasn't enough to stop Cornell's offense, which kept steady pressure on the Brown net en route to the win. With the loss, Brown falls to 1-10-3 on the season, including 0-7-3 in league play, while Cornell improves to 8-4-2 overall, including 7-1-2 against ECAC opponents.
The Big Red got their first opportunity just over four minutes into the game, taking several shots on goal in a quick flurry. Though Jamieson made the save on all of them, she was unable to get back into position in time, and the puck was left sitting just shy of the goal line. Junior defenseman Samantha Stortini made a heads up play though, swooping in to clear the puck and preserve the tie. Cornell finally got on the board with just under two minutes to play in the opening frame, however, as sophomore Chelsea Karpenko redirected a shot from outside into net for a 1-0 lead.
Cornell continued to shoot well in the second period, notching 15 shots, and adding two more goals. Though the Bears held the game at 1-0 through the first 12 minutes of the frame, the Big Red picked up a pair of goals off of rebounds in the final eight minutes, taking a 3-0 lead into the second intermission. Cornell lit the lamp once more with just over seven minutes in the game, and again at the 4:47 mark to pull away for a 5-0 lead that would hold through the final horn.
The Bears will be back in action on January 2, 2010, when they take on Northeastern in Boston at 2:00 p.m.
