Bears Pick Up Overtime Win Against Fairfield

PROVIDENCE, RI - The Brown field team picked up its first overtime win of the season today, defeating the Stags of Fairfield by a score of 3-2.

Both teams were held scoreless through the first half and the majority of the second half, as the game remained 0-0 until seven minutes remained in regulation.

Brown senior Kate McHugh (Woburn, MA) netted the first goal of the game and her first of the season at 7:15, when she one-timed the ball into the cage off of a beautiful cross from Susana Garcia (Highland Lakes, NJ). Fairfield was not to be shut out, however, as Karen Zanleoni (Barre, VT) nailed a ball into the corner of the net to tie the game with only 3:48 left in the half. Brown was not done, though - only 40 seconds after the tying score, Cara Gardner (Hensall, ONT) notched an unassisted goal to give the Bears the lead again. With no time left on the clock, the Stags were awarded a penalty corner. Emilie Hugenholtz (Naarden, Netherlands) drove in a direct hit to force the game into overtime, just putting the ball past a diving post player Katie Austin (Houston, TX), who recorded two defensive saves in the game.

The Bears had a couple of very close scoring opportunities early into overtime, but could not get the ball in the net. Finally, with 3:10 remaining, Ashley Wallace (Avon, CT) drove in the gamewinner from the edge of the circle to give Brown the 3-2 victory.

The Bears took 23 shots in the game and had 11 penalty corners, while the Stags had 14 shots and also had 11 corners.

The Bears, who improve to 9-6 overall, have their last game of the season this Saturday, November 4, when they take on Yale at noon on Warner Roof.
