Bears Rout Cornell 5-1

The Brown field hockey team picked up its first Ivy League win of the season today as it dominated Cornell, defeating the Big Red by a score of 5-1.

The Bears started the offense early, as Susana Garcia (Highland Lakes, NJ) netted the first goal off a corner hit at 32:45. She was assisted by both Cara Gardner (Hensall, ONT) and Megan Patterson (Holliston, MA). Seven minutes later, Patterson notched her own unassisted goal after a scramble in front of the net. Midfielder Ashley Wallace (Avon, CT) fired a rocket into the back of the cage at 12:41 for her first goal of the season, increasing the Brown lead to three. Less than three minutes later, Gardner had a one-on-one with Cornell keeper Maureen Sullivan (San Francisco, CA), and put the ball away after taking a great pass from Laurel Pierpont (Jacksonville, FL) to end the half at 4-0.

Brown came out fired up in the second half, scoring its fifth goal only 20 seconds after the passback, as Gardner passed the ball to Nikki Gamer (Danvers, MA), who easily put it away. Cornell's Ashleigh Snelson (Mountaintop, PA) prevented the shutout, scoring off a corner hit with 2:52 left in the contest. She was assisted by both Kate McMahon (Saratoga Springs, NY) and Karleigh Burns (Ambler, PA).

The Bears had a total of 26 shots inside the circle and 11 penalty corners, while Cornell had three shots and three corners.

Brown's Annie Owens (Louisville, KY) made one save in net for the win, and Sullivan had 14 saves for the Big Red.

The Bears, who improve to 7-6 overall and 1-4 in the Ivy League, play their next game on Sunday, October 29, when they travel to Philadelphia to take on the University of Pennsylvania.
