Holy Cross Tops Bears, 2-1
WORCESTER, MA (Oct. 18, 2000) -- The field hockey team dropped a non-league game on October 18 to the Crusaders of Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass. The Bears fall to 6-6 overall, while Holy Cross improves to 11-3.
The first half was scoreless for both sides, and the Crusaders jumped ahead of the Bears early into the second half of the game. They took a 1-0 lead at 32:19, notching the first tally of the contest. No one scored again until 3:24 remained in regulation, as Holy Cross grabbed its second goal of the afternoon to lead the Bears 2-0. With only 58 seconds remaining, Brown's Susana Garcia (Highland Lakes, NJ) prevented the shutout when she knocked in the lone Bear goal on a direct corner hit. She was assisted by both Cara Gardner (Hensall, ONT) and Megan Patterson (Holliston, MA).
With that assist, Patterson becomes the Brown record-holder for assists in a career, with 29 and counting. The record was previously set by Kim Rogers '00 (Eastham, MA) from 1996-99 with 28.
The Bears were outshot by the Crusaders 12-9 in the game, but took two more penalty corners, as Brown had seven and Cross had five. Annie Owens (Louisville, KY) made five saves in the net for the Bears.
Brown has its next game at noon this coming Saturday, October 21, when the team takes on the Big Red of Cornell with the chance of capturing its first Ivy win of the year.
