Field Hockey Falls to #7 Princeton, 4-1

(Oct. 14, 2000) -- The Brown field hockey team dropped its fourth Ivy League game of the year on October 15, as Princeton defeated the Bears 4-1 to remain undefeated in Ivy play.

Brown came out ready in the first half, taking an early 1-0 lead at 28:49, only six minutes into the game. Susana Garcia (Highland Lakes, NJ) knocked in a corner hit that was double-assisted by Megan Patterson (Holliston, MA) and Cara Gardner (Hensall, ONT) to give Brown its only goal of the game. A lapse in the Bears' defense would prove costly, however, as Princeton went on a four-goal scoring spree within a thirteen minute period in the first half, taking a 4-1 lead.

It started at 18:54, when the Tigers responded to the Brown score with a corner hit of their own, as Cory Picketts (Marmora, NJ) drove in the tying goal with a double-assist from Hilary Matson (Marathon, NY) and Bridget Marchesi (Spring Lake, NJ). Less than three minutes later, Princeton capitalized again as freshman Claire Miller (Scarsdale, NY) notched the unassisted winning goal for the Tigers. At 10:47, Emily Townsend (Houston, Texas) knocked in an unassisted goal of her own, increasing the lead to 3-1. With 5:31 remaining in the first half, Aviva Meerschwam (Amstelveen, Netherlands) took an assist from her sister Melanie Meerschwam (Amstelveen, Netherlands) to score the final Princeton goal. The score was 4-1 at the half and at the end of the game, as both teams were held scoreless in the second half.

Brown took a total of eight shots on goal and had six corners, while keeper Annie Owens (Louisville, KY) registered eight saves in the net.

Princeton had 19 shots in the game and 12 penalty corners, with Kelly Baril (Peabody, MA) making five saves in goal for the win.

Megan Patterson notched her 28th career assist versus Princeton; she is now tied with recent graduate Kim Rogers (Eastham, MA) for the Brown record of assists in a career.

The Bears, who drop to 6-5 overall, 0-4 in the Ivy League, play their next game this Wednesday, October 18, at Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m.
