Brown Shuts Out Northeastern 4-0

PROVIDENCE, RI - The Brown field hockey team (5-3, 0-2) earned its second shutout of the season today when it defeated the Northeastern Huskies (7-5, 2-1) 4-0 on Warner Roof.

The Bears played to perfection, making accurate passes and great tackles at all positions. They opened up the scoring at 17:55 in the first half on a corner, when Susana Garcia (Highland Lakes, NJ) knocked in a rebound off the pads of Husky keeper Kathleen Madaus (Boylston, MA) after an initial shot by Lizzie Buza (Houston, TX). Brown continued to pressure the Husky defense and found another scoring opportunity with eight minutes left in the half. After Garcia ran the ball up the field, she passed the ball to the stick of Buza inside the circle, who put away her first collegiate goal to improve the Bears' lead to 2-0.

Brown did not let up in the second half, as the offense continued to hassle the Northeastern defense. At 22:12, Lauren LaRochelle (Augusta, ME) notched her first goal of the game when she tipped in a great pass by Hyun-Joo Park (Wayne, NJ). Less than three minutes later, LaRochelle struck again, redirecting a ball into the net that was fired by Megan Patterson (Holliston, MA). The Bears held onto the four-goal lead to end the game with their second shutout of the season.

Brown had 13 shots and six corners in the game, while Northeastern tallied three shots and three corners.

Madaus recorded seven saves in the net, and Brown keeper Annie Owens (Louisville, KY) stopped two in the winning effort.

The Bears, who improve to 5-3 overall, play their next game at home this Saturday, October 7, when they take on the Columbia Lions at noon in their third Ivy match of the season.
