Brown Field Hockey Shuts Out Rhode Island 7-0

PROVIDENCE, RI - The Brown field hockey team earned its third win of the season today as it shut out the Rhode Island Rams 7-0 in a spectacular performance on Warner Roof.

The Bears came out strong in the first half, putting a lot of pressure on the Rams' goalie before Susy Garcia (Highland Lakes, NJ) took a pass from Lizzie Buza (Houston, TX) and put it in the back of the net twelve minutes into the game. The remainder of the half was in Brown's offensive end the majority of the time, with the Bears taking eighteen shots and six corners. However, only one more goal would find its way onto the board before halftime. With 7:40 left, Garcia took the ball from center field and dribbled into the edge of the circle before firing a shot that would end the first half with Brown leading 2-0.

Brown did not let up as the whistle blew to start the second half. With 26:29 remaining in the game, Cara Gardner (Hensall, Ontario) notched her first goal of the day and sixth of the season, increasing the Bears' lead to three goals. Only two minutes later, Brown was awarded a penalty stroke when a Rhode Island defender stopped a goal with her body. Megan Patterson (Holliston, MA) netted her third stroke of the season in as many attempts. At 20:26, less than five minutes later, freshman Laurel Pierpoint (Jacksonville, FL) registered her first collegiate goal when she tipped a pass from Lizzie Buza past the goalie. With 9:18 left in the contest, another freshman scored her first goal for Brown, Molly Carleton (Shaker Heights, OH), when she redirected a blast from Patterson. Still, leading 6-0, the Bears did not give up. With 48 seconds remaining in the game, Hyun-Joo Park (Wayne, NJ) netted an unassisted goal, her third of the season, to end the contest at a score of 7-0.

The Bears recorded 38 total shots inside the circle and twelve penalty corners, while the Rams registered four shots and four corners.

In goal for Rhode Island was freshman Danielle Dangoia (Bridgewater, MA) and senior Amanda Heryla (Easton, PA). They had a combined total of 25 saves for the Rams.

The Brown field hockey team improves its record to 3-1overall, while Rhode Island falls to 3-5 overall.

The Bears have their next match-up this weekend on Saturday, September 23, when they take on the Harvard Crimson in their second Ivy League contest of the season. Game time is at noon on Warner Roof at Brown University.
