Brown Field Hockey Downs Providence in Home Opener

(Sept. 13, 2000) -- The Brown field hockey team defeated Providence College by a score of 4-1 on September 13, improving to 2-0, while Providence drops to 0-6 overall, 0-1 in the Big East.

After 16 minutes of dominantly midfield play, Brown broke the scoreless tie when Cara Gardner (Hensall, ONT.) dribbled into the circle and found the back of the net. Only three minutes later, Hyun-Joo Park (Wayne, NJ) added a second goal for the Bears when she scored off of a rebound that was shot by Gardner. Brown remained in control for the rest of the half, playing a physical game.

The Bears came out ready to score in the second half, doubling the number of shots on goal they had in the first half of the game. With 23:20 remaining, Gardner scored her second goal on a beautiful redirection from a pass made by Susana Garcia (Highland Lakes, NJ) in the midfield. Eight minutes later, Stacey Lafond (North Andover, MA) had a breakaway and drew a penalty stroke from the Providence goalie, who got called on the play for trying to take out the person rather than the ball. Megan Patterson (Holliston, MA) put the stroke away and increased Brown's lead to 4-0 with 15 minutes left in the game.

Providence freshman Stefanie Suehnholz (Flemington, NJ) scored the lone goal for her team with 9:21 to go, when she drove the ball into the corner of the net from the top of the circle.

The Brown field hockey team has its first Ivy League match-up of the year this Saturday, September 16, when it travels to Dartmouth to take on the Big Green at noon.
