Brown Field Hockey Set for 2000 Season After Opening Scrimmage

The Brown University field hockey team opened the gates for a promising 2000 season after winning their scrimmage against the University of Waterloo by a score of 2-1, on Sunday, September 3.

Playing at the neutral site of Harvard University, the Bears finished off their pre-season with a competitive scrimmage against the Canadian University before traveling to Hofstra this Saturday for the season opener.

The Bears lit up the scoreboard only ten minutes into the first half, when junior forward Hyun-Joo Park (Wayne, NJ) netted a goal that was assisted by freshman forward Lizzie Buza (Houston, TX). With the momentum of the game picking up after the first tally, the Bears scored their second goal only five minutes later. Senior tri-captain Susy Garcia (Highland Lakes, NJ) brought the ball down the field and made a beautiful pass into the circle, where Lizzie Buza dove in front of the Waterloo goalkeeper to put the ball past her and into the net. The Bears were awarded five penalty corners in the first half and goalie Annie Owens (Louisville, KY) recorded one save, while junior back Katie Austin (Houston, TX) also recorded a defensive save.

Although the second half was less offensive for Brown, they demonstrated great defensive corner units and a strong defensive unit on the field. Freshman goalie Erica Rogers (Philadelphia, PA) recorded three saves in the net before Waterloo put their lone goal on the scoreboard with 15:57 left in the game. Playing extremely aggressive defense, only thirty seconds later Brown's Susy Garcia got a green card for hitting from behind. The Bears defense did not let up, as junior goalie Sasha Friedman (Silver Spring, MD) recorded six saves in the net to preserve the 2-1 victory.

The Field Hockey team officially opens its 2000 season at noon this Saturday, September 9, at Hofstra University in New York.
